Inquiry into FR petition against forceful eviction fixed for March 10

Three-member bench of the Sri Lankan Supreme Court this week fixed the inquiry
into the fundamental rights petition filed in the forceful eviction of
Tamils from lodges in Colombo for March 10 as the counsel for the
petitioner agreed to consider the suggestion by the court to come to a
compromise as the Sri Lankan Prime Minister had tendered an apology, legal
sources said.
The FR petition filed by a Tamil trader Thambirajah Kanthasamy came up
for inquiry before the bench presided by the Chief Justice Sarath
Silva. Other members were justices Shiranee Tilakawardene and Jagath
Balapattebendi It was stated by the court that the interim order issued by the court
on the Inspector General of Police against the forceful eviction of
Tamils from lodges in Colombo without reasonable suspicion and valid
reason is still in force. The petitioner has cited the Inspector general of Police, officers
–in-charge of Wellawatte, Kotahena, Wattala and Fort police stations,
the Defence Secretary, Commanders of the three armed forces and the
Attorney General as respondents. President counsel K.Kannan Easwaran appeared for the petitioner.
