Currently Listening
From the Desk of Mr. Lady
By Le Tigre
see related

i just had a revelation.... if lesbians/feminists weren't so put down/socially unacceptable (the real lesbians, not the ones who are only lesbians when they're drunk enough)/paid the same wage as men and therefore not so angry/political, would they still have made such good music?

note to self, don't listen to le tigre again when doing homework. that's a note to you too.

in other news i went to see Orchid Ensemble tonight with christian fil. yep, i went to see a concert of ASIAN MUSIC. yeah, there was a cymbal that made a gong noise, so what? anyhoo, it was free, and it's hard to hang out with fil with all of his obligations, and i'm up for almost anything for entertainment. it was... interesting. i started to think halfway through, what would have happened if:

a - i actually spoke chinese and understood what they were singing.

b - what would my musical tastes be if my parents listened to that type of chinese music rather than uh, karaoke chinese music (UGHHHHHHhhhhHHhHhHhhhhHHhhhh)

c - what i would think of the music if i wasn't so opposed to everything chinese

i'm happy i'm a westerner. and don't you forget it.

sometimes when i wake up, i'm sad i'm not in my dream anymore

i've been melting my brain as much as i can since my 2 big exams were done thursday (complex analysis, [it wouldn't be hard if i actually did the unrequired homework earlier than... right before the exam], and geography [hey, hey, it's a lot of material. can you tell me when the freaking glaciation period in north america ended? yep, too bad that i put when it started instead as an answer, twice.)

so how have i been melting my brain you ask? television, and lots of it. i was feeling bad about myself and pissy thursday (before and after exams) and because my usual thursday aftercrappylongdayofabout7hoursofclassandwork plans weren't working out, and i go a little nuts when i study (something about work can make me start doing really eccentric things to avoid doing work) i had an ample supply of tv shows and movies on my hard drive that was just begging to give my brain sweet sweet love. so:

~i watched Euro Trip (technically on wednesday, but i'll include it in here anyways): i know, i know, shitty made for dumb teenagers who just want to see some boobies, but sometimes you need to just be a dumbass, and of course i was missing europe again. so anyhoo, a few things i wanted to comment on about the movie:

1. the manchester football (not american football of course) hooligans: i thought that it was particularly funny that they were in this because i'd just read a bbc article about how russian football hooligans base themselves off the 1980s english football hooligan and nowadays they're not even allowed anymore and it's a pity.

2. Lucy Lawless is in that movie?! for those of you who don't know who that is, she's obviously Xena, only like, my hero when i was a child and would watch tv all the time. i wished i was a warrior princess many atime when i was little cause of her.

3. what? take an indirect route to berlin via amsterdam and denmark? when you've just graduated high school and are blowing off your jobs and doing it last minute? DO YOU KNOW HOW EXPENSIVE THAT IS?! (train from Heidelberg (bottom left) to Berlin (upper right) alone is about 70 euro by slow train (approx $91, even more now that the euro is so low, but the movie is from 2004) 100 by fast, if bought last minute. sorry guys, i'm anal about stuff like that.

4. i hope that normal americans don't base their stereotypes of europe on that movie (cause we all know how ignorant americans can be...). like: bratislava, slovakia, is actually a pretty nice place. a bit boring compared to most other european capitals, but even still... the movie exaggerates its eastern european status a bit too much. italian people, although sometimes very greasy looking, are never that creepy. although i did like how they put american stereotypes in it (i don't know if most americans would actually notice though) such as: they of course go to paris, since it's oh so romantic (smart people know that it's all about vienna), and they make asses of themselves in amsterdam.

~then i finally started to watch Flight of the Conchords (once i realized it's spelt conchords and not concords.) it's a pretty hilarious show, but i donno, something about it makes me not want to watch them one after the other, or really much at all. i do enjoy the songs, and sort of enjoy the plot, but i donno. maybe it's cause i actually know where new zealand is, and that i've actually meet a new zealander (although she was an annoying failed whore that i really wouldn't go out of my way at all to ever speak to, although her tragic existences was slightly entertaining, ok, very entertaining, but that's a story of another time) that makes me not as intrigued? i donno. it's a good show though and you guys should watch it, but only if you can get it for free.

~i also finally got around to the strongly recommended Rome too, and that is indeed addictive. perhaps it's because i saw I, Claudius as well that i think this show is genius and amazing. i also know sort of a bit about roman culture (i didn't learn a bit of latin in latin class, but by gods did i learn culture, through my own self interest of course though.) it's masterfully done, very accurately done, and just well, a pretty good subject. and of course, there's lots of boob and man butt, which i don't mind of course (the boobs make me feel better about my own seeing that other girls also don't all have perfectly round perky boobs like the way they make boobs look normally on america tv, and the manbutt, well, it's manbutt, i like a good manbutt, and of course they're not going to put bad manbutt on tv.)

~tonight i also watched quite a bit of tv. ones i wanted to point out:

1. Deutsche Welle Channel. yeah, i didn't realize we has a special channel for it here, but we do and no complaints from me. it's nice to actually see german tv that isn't crap, or just news. anyhoo, other than the usual barge of international news i always get when i try to listen/watch anything german here (turkey wants to go into iraq? already read that in bbc, you've lost my interest), they also had a popular music section and a (i guess special) on people trying to immigrate to germany. first, the popular music section, i was excited to maybe find out about more music actually sung in german, but the first artist, i don't understand if i wasn't paying enough attention to the show (i was folding bags at the same time, don't ask) or if i'm dumb or if my german is just that bad, but i couldn't figure out what the guy's music was, how long he's been around or even what his style was. everytime i thought i sort of understood (he's experimental, goes with it, has been around awhile?) they would go back to this same clip of a building collapsing, and they did that at least 5 times. wtf. then the special cultural immigration one. yep, an eye opener. other cultures trying to move into germany are having a hard time. they're worse than us when it comes to mexicans! ok, more specifically: they followed a muslim french speaking african, a russian (i think, i didn't catch where he was from, but it sounded like he was speaking some slavic language before they'd start the german dubbing), an iranian woman and a mexican student. the muslim african had a hard time because he was in school and had to work and go to school at the same time. he'd have to be at work at 5 am and then go to school later and had a hard life. the russian's wife leaves him at some point and he's left in a fight over their son. the iranian woman has the problem of her father now only being german and renouncing his background because when he first go to germany they told him he has to do it their way, and she wasn't happy this. most importantly was the mexican student, because she was probably the worst off (maybe after the african, i didn't catch most of his story) but basically: her family doesn't have much money, she's been a student for 6 years and they can't afford to pay for her anymore so she has to work and study, she can't help her family at all financially because of school, and she has to deal with germans not wanting her to immigrate there because she's mexican and they only want people from other parts of the world. yeah, what's up with that, she speaks german, she's studying there, she'd obviously be a contributer rather than a leech like... some illegal immigrants, but no, she wouldn't be good for germany. how wrong is that. as much as germany tries to be international with it's exchange programs and it's many international shops and interests in other cultures, it's still sort of racist in at least a little way. what i find especially funny is how germans are now flocking to sweden and profiting off their higher standard of living, and then they wouldn't want people from much worse means to do the same.

2. Tila Tequila's a Shot at Love show. yeah, lame i know, another reality tv based show (and as we know, cheap budget therefore vh1 trash show) but it is sort of fun to see how ridiculous people are. so the show's premise is that tila is bi and she's trying to figure out whether she would fall in love with a man or woman. first off, all the of the men in the show are so corny it's ridiculous. they couldn't have picked worse guys, most are just dumb assholes doing it for the competition of getting some ass, aka your typical american frat boy, or even just typical american asshole guy. then the girls think they're the best thing in the world because they've all gone through the same thing as tila, and they're smarter than the guys, but really the most focused on girls are catty, overcompetitive, and pretty much the main reason why i wouldn't want to be a lesbian. it's supposed to be about finding real love, but a few of them already "love" tila and that's why they want to win her heart. yeah. sure. if i ever ended up being bi, please people, make sure i don't ever let me try to figure myself out in that way.

ok, obviously i should go to bed, (after watching some more Rome of course), but first i want to make one last rambling comment noone really wants to read. what's up with the rising scandinavian indie scene? at first i thought it was real cool (The Sounds, Peter Bjorn and John [i still like to call them Peter Bjrn och John even though you're supposed to pronounce it the american way!], etc.) but now i'm starting to think they're all starting to sound the same (Jens Lekman [who's last name means layman or play man depending on how you look at it!], laakso, mando diao, etc.) of course they don't sound like they're all the same band, but it sounds like a specific indie rock band sound is coming out of scandinavia (mainly sweden). usually quirky lyrics, sort of poppy sounding, lots of american influence, and THE SAME EXACT VOCAL STYLE. it's starting to really get on my nerves. i know they'd be a lot cooler sounding if they were in swedish, but well, one of the cds i got to review for the radio station (i saw danish names for band members and i got excited) well, it's poo. it sounds just like everything else that's coming out of that area now. comeon lads, you guys have classy furniture, awesome nature, and real quirky people, you can do better.

man, it's going to be hard waking up on monday at this rate.

Happy Planet?!

Happy Planet Index
Your personal Happy Planet Index (HPI) is 58.2, which is similar to that of Seychelles, Indonesia or Tonga. Not bad. This is above the world average of 46, but still below the target value of 83, so there is more you can do to improve your health and well-being, or reduce your environmental impact. Your score is above that of your country, 28.8.

I like how much I was compared to Europe:

Life Satisfaction
You reported a life satisfaction of 8. This is the most common response across UK and indeed all of Europe. However, it is above average, so we are happy that you are so happy. Only in two countries is the mean life satisfaction higher - Switzerland and Denmark.

Your ecological footprint is 4.93 global hectares, or 2.74 planets. This is equivalent to the average in countries such as Belgium, Luxembourg or Iceland.

i think my ecological footprint might be a little less than that though since they recommend cutting down your meat, especially beef, but i mainly eat chicken... so that counts right?

now calculate yours!

oh snap!

so i've been watching the news from different parts in the world (i don't know why, but we have a channel here that does that, i've watched the german news on it before and it's a bore, i've also tried listening to german news on an online radio stream and i suddenly had to fall asleep) and well, let's get organized about this:

First: Icelandic - it was like weird swedish! sometimes i can catch a word or two in swedish (or recognize some words due to my dabbles in listening to swedish music actually sung in swedish, aka listening to Doktor Kosmos [you can click on english for their description, but that page isn't as well done] and the similarities from german) but (as my swede explained to me) icelandic is like old swedish. it's sort of like comparing american english to british english, but with more differences existing. yep, from what i could gather, they were talking about cows (because they kept showing a picture of a cow's hide with white powder on it), a guy's book about fishing (with some pretty pictures in it of iceland), and then they started talking about golf tournaments around the world or something so i stopped paying attention.

Second: French - of course there's another protest in paris (this time about a new health bill that was intended to have doctors move more to urban areas, but would have the backlash effect of a reduction in national healthcare). the french are ALWAYS protesting, but you know, you gotta admire them because they actually care about their politics and actually have their protests be heard is so much better than here. remember how france followed america in revolution from back in the day? i think it's about time we do it the other way now. what else in french news? milk products prices might be on the rise. that's right, stock up on your french dairy products now! and rugby is on the rise in france. the little boys LOVE IT.

Third: Ukrainian - for those of you who don't know about my dabbling in the slavic... love department (i guess?), you wouldn't know that i've heard russian spoke before, and i've had someone of ukrainian decent tell me this as well (on a separate occasion from years before that russian guy), russian is fairly similar to ukrainian (and i think they sound pretty darn similar too). so, yeah, it's like a blast from the past, except these people have much better russian than that guy, but i've also noticed that slavic people (like chinese people) all sort of look the same? to be fair, i'm semi basing this on the fact that the news opened with a military base that had all shaved headed young men, which is sort of how my russian used to have his hair. i didn't really figure out anything of what's going on in the ukraine (they have less images than the icelandic news did, and the french news had crude subtitles combined with my little french knowledge that allowed me to confirm that the numbers in the subtitles were correct). wait, i think i heard someone say devochka (girl in russian).

well, the moral of this all is: i wish i was a linguist, but i suck at picking up languages, so i'll just have to settle with having the understanding of a 3 year old in as many languages as i can.

ok, i feel like i'm 17 again and listening to my boyfriend have his dad lecture him on what to do in russian again. bedtime.

crap, balls, poop, i miss europe.

so last night i had a dream, that i was back in germany. for some reason my main goal in the dream was to get some Gummibren and Sarotti Chocolate but for some reason i couldn't find any, even though it was a supermarket the size of an average american supermarket (they tend to be a little different there). i think it might have been a nightmare, but all i could do was think WHAT THE HECK ARE THEY?! (i miss them most out of everything from the supermarket, except for the cheaper prices and the wursts.)

so i also of course get my daily pangs of why am i here, i wish i was in europe, pains all day. and now Boys Noize. i swear i've heard of his name before, and it turns out it's a german dj. yep, and then i watched one of the videos on his remixes myspace (Here) of bloc party (which is the song i think i've heard) and it was a room full of germans. sigh, i miss it. i miss it. i realized today that i was probably more attractive over there because individualism is more attractive there, well, i semi already knew that, but the fact that here the average girl who looks like everyone else is the one sought after. i finally caved and decided to see what the big deal about playboy is (don't ask how i got a copy, but don't worry, i didn't pay for it or anything, and i don't count the 1970s vintage ones i was leafed through once at a new york flea market as already having read one) and firstly, i must say, there aren't as many naked ladies in that as i thought (movie and video game reviews? wtf?) and secondly, i must say the girls in that are not attractive. i admit sometimes i wonder about myself and whether i might swing for the other team afterall, but playboy has made me decide there's no way. first, why the girls in that magazine are not attractive. they all look the same! either early 20s or younger, blonde and/or brunette, same face, same body, all white, and most have that homey look of blending into a crowd of other people who all buy the same products and wear the same make up most girls wear. does this mean that men who read playboy are looking for normalcy? are they so afraid to deviate from what they know? and can anyone please tell me, what is so appealing about a girl's parts being shaved? it just makes her woman parts look even more disgusting (my main argument as to why i'm not gay normally). i mean, just look at it, it's like something burrowed out of her body and just left the flaps there because it was too lazy to close up the hole.

i digress. the moral of this all, i want to go back to europe. i should be studying, but for some reason the way things work here, i don't even think i have to ever study to pass.
