SLA assaults Thenmaradchchi fishermen

[TamilNet, December 03, 2003 14:47 GMT]
The Kachchai fisheries society in Thenmaradchchi in Jaffna district Wednesday made a complaint to the authorities concerned that its three members had been assaulted by soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army located in the coastal sentry point when they were returning to shore after fishing in Kachchai lagoon thirty minutes behind the scheduled time, civil groups said.

This incident took place Monday evening and the Sri Lanka Army did not allow the Kachchai fishermen for fishing in the Kachchai lagoon on Tuesday, sources said.

The SLA has now allowed Kachchai fishermen to fish during daytime between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in boats without using outboard engines, fisheries sources said.
